Still, it is necessary to know what are the documents required for second hand bike purchase so you know what to look for. This article will help you identify them.

List of documents required for second hand bike purchase

There is a long list of documents that you require when you take possession of a bike, especially a second hand one. Let’s take a look at what the seller has to provide:

  1. The RC book or the Registration Certificate of the bike
  2. The RC book or the Registration Certificate of the bike
  3. A valid bike insurance plan
  4. NOC (No Objection Certificate) if the bike was erstwhile taken on a loan
  5. The PUC (Pollution Under Control) certification for the vehicle.
  6. Two signed copies of Form 29 and one signed copy of Form 30 are to be submitted to the RTO (Regional Transport Office) for documenting the legal transfer of the bike’s ownership.

The buyer must also have their documents required for second hand bike purchase to transfer the same in his name, which is as follows:

  1. A photo identity proof (such as PAN Card, Aadhar Card, Passport, Driving License, etc.)
  2. Proof of address

Forms to be submitted to the RTO

There are 2 forms to be submitted to the RTO when purchasing a second hand bike. They are Form 29 and Form 30, each with a specific purpose served. Here’s what they are:

  1. Form 29

The original seller of the bike needs to provide 2 signed copies of Form 29 along with the papers of the bike for registering the transfer of ownership of the bike to the buyer. Both the forms need to be submitted at the RTO

  2. Form 30

As an extension of Form 29, Form 30 is also used to accredit the purchase and transfer of ownership of the bike and one copy of this form must be submitted to the RTO.

  3. Form 35

If the bike was originally purchased on a loan, then Form 35 needs to be submitted along with the NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the bank for transfer of ownership of the bike to the new buyer.

Importance of the documents required for second hand bike purchase

Every document required for second hand bike purchase serves a specific purpose. Here’s what they are:

  1. The RC or the Registration Certification book

It proves that the vehicle is properly registered with the authorities at the Regional Transport Office. It also shows the chain of ownership for the bike. This way, if you get pulled over, you can prove that the current ownership belongs to you with no conflicts. It also shows the specifications of the vehicle.

You need to match the chassis number of the bike with the registration certificate of the bike to confirm its validity.

  2. A Valid Bike Insurance policy

It is an absolute must if you want to ride your second hand bike or any motorized two-wheeler vehicle on Indian Roads. It is prescribed under the addendum for vehicular insurance policy and you have to register the insurance with the RTO. Thus, you need to have a valid Bike Insurance Plan along with the second-hand bike. It could be:

    1. Third party insurance plan, which is legally mandated by the Government of India. This type of insurance plan covers all the legal liabilities of the bike to a third party vehicle, property or person, but doesn't provide coverage to its own damages.
    2. A comprehensive insurance plan provides third party legal liability coverage along with the own damage protection of the bike.
  3. The PUC or the ‘Pollution Under Control’ certification

It is an authorization that the bike that you are purchasing has passed the Pollution Test. Therefore, it does not contribute heavily to carbon footprint or degradation of the environment. This certificate has an expiry date so keep an eye on that and remember to periodically have the bike tested when the certificate expires.

If the PUC of the bike is not provided, you can easily get it done from any of the registered PUC test centers at a petrol pump.

  4. The NOC or No Objection Certificate

If the bike was taken on a loan, the loan needs to be repaid and a NOC needs to be obtained before selling the bike. Thus, Form 35 along with a NOC from the bank needs to be provided so that there is no outstanding loan on the bike at the time of sale. Once Form 35 is submitted at the RTO, the “hypothecation” on the bike would be removed.

  5. Form 29 and Form 30

Two copies of Form 29 and one copy of Form 30 need to be registered with the RTO for registering the change of ownership. The seller as well as the buyer needs to sign the documents.

These are the documents required for second hand bike purchase to be provided by the seller. The buyer needs to provide his KYC documents such as photo identity proof and residential address proof. A passport, Aadhar Card and Driving License can suffice for both.

The Aadhaar card works best as they serve as proof of identity as well as an address proof. However, if the listed address on the Aadhaar card does not match the buyer’s residential address, then he/she must provide proof for his/her current residential address as well. It can be a house deed, rental agreement, utility bill, etc. or anything else that is legally valid.

The BeepKart advantage:

BeepKart provides assistance to the completion of all this documentation on your behalf by collecting all necessary KYC and other documents from both the buyer and the seller and submitting the same at the RTO for the legal transfer of ownership of the bike. So, there is very little that you need to worry about as BeepKart assists you on all the proper and legal formalities with the documentation!

In India, it is illegal to ride a two-wheeler without updated insurance. Additionally, if the new owner meets with an accident, the insurance companies will refuse to pay for any damages unless the documents are in place.

By buyers

1. What is the time duration for document transfer once the bike is booked?

The RC transfer of your two-wheeler can take around 60-90 working days.

Note:

  • This timeline will begin from the 7th day post your purchase provided all the required documents have been received by then.
  • The Registration Certificate (RC) transfer process is regulated by government rules. We have to follow the statutory process at local RTO office and that could be time consuming and slow moving. While most of the RC transfers are completed within 60-90 working days, some may get delayed due to issues beyond our control. We kindly request for your patience while we prioritize your request.

Throughout the RC transfer process, you can visit www.vahan.parivahan.gov.in to check the live status of your Two Wheeler RC. Alternatively, you can also reach out to us at our after-sales support number 18001231442 or write to us at [email protected] for updates.

The bike is delivered immediately after the full payment for the bike is made.
